Chat GPT is all the hype. So, having seen the leaps in the quality of AI-generated art, I decided to try some writing with the OpenAI chat tool as my buddy.
And… my mind is blown.
I gave the AI short prompts to see if it could generate some compelling poems in the style of different famous and amazing dead poets, but using modern-day topics
All of the pieces below are completely unedited. And all but one are the first result after I gave the prompt!
Also, I threw the generated poems themselves into Midjourney to generate, hopefully, fitting art.
Let’s see what we got!
On Social Media
From “The Influencer,” by Khalil Gibran
In this digital age, we crave
The constant validation and praise
Of likes and hearts on screens
Yet true connection still eludes our means
We stare into the void, lost in its glow
Forgetting the world that lies outside,
a world we used to know.
On Twitch Streamers
From “Digitalica,” by Edgar Allen Poe
In the dark of night, the streamers rise
Their screens aglow, a familiar sight
Fingers flying, they play their games
As their viewers watch and call out their names
For hours they continue on
Entertaining until the break of dawn.
(1st result for prompt)
--
Twitch streamers, they are a breed
Dedicated and always in need
Of one more victory, one more win
To keep their fans engaged and grinning
They may not be the most traditional bards
But on Twitch, they reign supreme in their own regard.
(2nd result for prompt)
On Loving Nuclear (power)
From “Prometheus’ Taunt,” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
The heat of the core, so strong and pure,
A boundless source of power, so sure.
The atoms they dance, a fiery blaze,
A love of this force, throughout our days.
We harness the power, with skill and might,
This love of the atom, a guiding light.
On Space Exploration
From “Mars & Venus,” by William Shakespeare
The stars above beckon us to explore,
To journey forth and seek what lies in store.
The mysteries of space, so vast and grand,
A realm of wonder, waiting to be scanned.
We reach for the stars with hearts full of grace,
Proudly carrying the torch of our human race.
We reach for the stars, with courage and might,
Determined to unlock the secrets of the night.
It’s unbelievable to me that the quality has gone up this fast. And I’m still unsure exactly what it’ll all mean for art (or the art scene in general).
I do think this is going to have an impact on work-related stuff—you can definitely let the AI write Linkedin platitude posts all day long—but I also think it’s gonna help people in expressing themselves even better. (And specifically for poetry, a large part for me in making poetry is my own expression. It’s more fun to write it myself, though I can see the AI as a tool to help spark ideas.)
Still, I feel crediting (dead) artists/authors is the way to go if you use prompts that use specific artists styles/works.
What would you use this AI chatbot for?
Thanks for reading and have a good night!
